Frequently Asked Questions

What is Céilí dancing?

Céilí dancing is a lively, social form of traditional Irish dance, often performed to upbeat jigs and reels. It’s easy to pick up and all about having fun with others on the dance floor.

What is Set dancing, and how is it different?

Irish Set dancing involves four couples dancing in a square formation. Each dance features a series of figures—sequences of moves—set to various tempos (polkas, slides, reels, jigs, or hornpipes), with regional variations across Ireland.

What happens in a typical class?

Classes are fun, inclusive, and suitable for all ages and abilities. You’ll meet new people, get active, and learn traditional dances at your own pace.

In adult classes:

  • Begin with simple Céilí dances as a warm-up.
  • Review set dances from previous weeks.
  • Every 3–4 weeks, a new dance is introduced and walked through together.
  • The tutor dances with the class, helping you enjoy “the craic” (Irish for fun!).

In workshops:

  • We teach basic Céilí steps and movements.
  • Dances are broken down into easy, repeatable patterns.
  • Everyone gets dancing to timed traditional Irish music in a relaxed, authentic cultural experience.
Do I need a dance partner?

Not at all! No partner or prior experience is needed. You’ll be paired up during the class and often rotate partners throughout the session.

Already have a partner? Fantastic—feel free to bring them along!

What should I wear to class?

Comfort is key! Wear breathable clothes that allow easy movement and won’t overheat you.

Footwear tips:

  • Comfortable shoes with smooth/slippery soles help with sliding and footwork.
