Experience the Magic of Irish Céilí Dancing with Fionán Cogan

Step into the vibrant world of Irish Céilí dancing with Fionán Cogan, a passionate teacher and performer whose reach spans primary and secondary schools, English language institutions, and university students at UCC. He teaches in English, Irish (Gaeilge), and occasionally French, making his sessions accessible, immersive, and culturally rich.

Though The Céilí Experience was officially founded by Fionán in 2008, its roots go back generations. He hails from the renowned Cogan family of Carrigaline, Co. Cork—one of Ireland’s most dedicated dance families. For over 50 years, the Cogans have been ambassadors of Céilí and Set Dancing, performing and promoting the tradition both locally and internationally. Their legacy includes hosting the Cork International Folk Dance Festival – Damhsafest, which has animated venues across Cork City, County Cork, and Munster since 1995.

Fionán first represented Ireland abroad in 1988 and has since danced in 18 countries across 3 continents with over 15 groups. His performances have featured on multiple television networks, and in 2005, he was part of the Guinness World Record for the largest Céilí dance. Notably, he has shared the stage with celebrated names like Michael Flatley, the late Dr. Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, and Frances Black.

In 1994, Fionán began formally teaching Céilí and Set Dancing. He earned his TMRC qualification from An Coimisiún in 2003 and has since run weekly adult classes for dancers of all levels—from complete beginners to seasoned performers. Alongside schools and universities, he has brought Irish dance to weddings, conferences, and corporate events, where his authentic yet engaging approach is in high demand.

Beyond teaching, Fionán is a key figure in several cultural and dance organisations, helping to preserve and promote Irish folk traditions. He has been instrumental in initiatives such as Damhsafest, Colours of Ireland, Owenabue Valley Traditional Group, Douglas Comhaltas, and Carrigaline Céilí Mór—all of which play a vital role in keeping the spirit of Céilí and Set Dancing alive both in Ireland and abroad.
